More Than a Place to Live: A Day in The Life of a Forest Resident

Each day at The Forest at Duke begins with a peaceful setting, a vibrant community, and the freedom to shape your time in whatever way feels right. What does a typical day look like? It’s entirely up to you.

Located in Durham, our community offers a peaceful, wooded setting just minutes from the culture and energy of downtown Durham and nearby Chapel Hill. Your morning might begin with a stroll through the trees, a yoga class with friends, or a tasty breakfast in one of our beautiful dining venues. In the afternoons and evenings, you’ll have endless opportunities to connect, learn, and recharge.

Our Community Life team plans more than 300 events and outings each month, which means that no two days are exactly the same. What days at The Forest do have in common is a balance of wellness, community, and personal choice, combined to create a meaningful experience for every resident.

“Community Life is often coined the ‘fun’ department on campus,” says Director of Community Life, Emma Quick. “But the importance of engagement and activity on our campus goes deeper than simply having fun,” she adds. “Community Life is here to instill purpose, fulfillment, and motivation for all residents who call The Forest at Duke home.”

Keep reading to explore what a day in the life of a Forest resident might look like. Though “Anne” is not an actual resident, her day, as imagined in this blog, is based on the experiences of real residents and real activities offered in our community.

The Rhythm of Daily Life

Mornings at The Forest begin peacefully for residents like Anne, who eases into her day with a cup of coffee and a few quiet moments on her porch, watching the light filter through the trees. After coffee, she heads out to join a walking group with friends. Later, she stops by the Bistro for a relaxed conversation over a latte.

Later in the morning, Anne joins a weekly meditation group led by a fellow resident, then stops by the library on her way home to pick out a new novel. After lunch in her own kitchen, she joins friends at an origami workshop in the Community Center Art Studio.

Later that afternoon, Anne heads to The Forest’s indoor pool for a swim. Then, in the early evening, she meets friends at Taproot, the on-campus lounge and restaurant, where conversation flows easily over happy hour and a relaxed meal. After dinner, Anne makes her way to the auditorium for a performance by the Durham Fellows, a string quartet from the Chamber Orchestra of the Triangle. When the concert ends, she heads home, settling in with a cup of tea and the novel she picked up earlier.

Every day at The Forest unfolds with flexibility. Anne’s day was busy with activities, but tomorrow she might decide to take it easy at home or join an outing to a local shopping center. There’s always the opportunity for routine at The Forest, but it’s more of a natural rhythm than a rigid plan.

Living with Intention, Every Day

Life at The Forest at Duke is shaped by choice, connection, and a focus on well-being and growth. Anne’s day is just one example of what life here can look like. There are always opportunities to engage, learn, and spend time with others, but nothing is prescribed or required. The result is a lifestyle that feels full without being overwhelming, where each person defines what a meaningful day looks like. “While daily life at The Forest looks different for each resident,” Emma says the Community Life programs “strive to create an environment where every resident feels supported, inspired, and empowered to make the most of their experience at The Forest at Duke.”
